Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, revealed on Thursday, December 1, that he has fulfilled his promise by destroying his United States residency green card.
Recall in November that the Nobel prize-winning author had threatened to destroy his green card and depart the country if the Republican Presidential candidate to the November 8 election, Donald Trump wins.
“If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he’ll do is to say [that] all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I’m not waiting for that.
“The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up,” Soyinka, who is scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs said.
Though the professor had promised to destroy the green card on Trump's swearing in day, to protest against the Republican billionaire’s campaign speeches, it seems he has taken the bull by the horn already by destroying the card before the stipulated time.
Speaking
with journalists in South Africa, Soyinka said: “I
have already done it, I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done
what I said I would do.
“I had a horror of what is to come
with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back
to where I have always been.” He opined.
