Inter tribal marriage has gradually become a trend
in Nigeria today with the country having more than 250 ethnic groups.
With each
of these tribal leanings being rich in values, beliefs, tradition and culture. These
groups each belong to a particular region with the Igbos dominating the
southeast, Yorubas in the southwest and the Hausas in the north.
However,
these regional boundaries, for many years, have largely reflected in the way
members of each tribe choose their spouses, due to their perception of some
other tribes.
Speaking
on inter-tribal, Okoro Nnamdi, a resident of Ogba who hails from Nnewi in
Anambra state, is of the opinion that inter tribal marriages should be
discouraged because it takes a longer period to learn one's culture and
tradition and as such many might take advantage of it to do something harmful
to their partners.
While
Nnamdi berated the practice, Chidi Nwanko, who hails from Ebenatom in Imo state
applauded the practice, adding that it is an avenue to unite the country.
Though there are challenges with the practice, notwithstanding, many still celebrate inter-tribal marriage for what they term its many gains, their biggest argument being that it could help foster unity.
