The National Anthem: Our Long Forgotten Heritage

By Tella  Temitope

The National Anthem of  any country should take into account the historical past as well as the aims and aspirations of the future generation.

The significance of the anthem lies in the fact that it binds all its citizens including into one chord even if they reside in far off lands.

Recently, the purpose for the anthem seem to be fading out in our country, the Nigerian citizens find no value in it which is quite a disappointment.

"It is an individual thing,I was taught how to recite the national anthem back in primary school. But of what use is it to me?", Tope Ogundipe a graduate and director of photography explained, adding that: ""I'm not even sure I can remember them  word for word .

"Recall a similar incident occurred in the just concluded Big Brother Naija where one of the contestant, TBoss couldn't recite the Nigerian national anthem on national Television", Ogundipe added.

Similarly, Kayla a pan African student had this to say: "Even Beyoncé sang the Nigerian national anthem from start to finish.Whats wrong with Nigerians?"

We also went to the streets of Lagos to find out if some Nigerians can recite the National Anthem correctly and this is what we got.
